Update on IEP :)

Well I was pretty riled up before the meeting. I still have mixed feelings but no hard feelings really like most of the meetings I have left. I went in there calm and cool and I even had an open mind. I am giving the school till the end of the year to see what happens. I want to see if Dakota’s anxiety and stress get better. When I say this I don’t mean that the school isn’t doing enough because honestly they really are trying.

We talked about assisstive technology and I expressed that maybe a concern as to added stress for Dakota. Well they are ahead of me there. We talked about the things we have used and what he is using now. I guess he is using a label maker. So that was good. Oh and they also said they expect less writing of him.

Dakota watches the schedule that the teacher has up on the wall. If something changes he gets upset. Which is nothing new but I didn’t know he paid attention to that so I learned something new.

He bites his nails alot so they have something I don’t know what it is but something on the end of his pencil that he is allowed to chew on. Apparently the first day he got it the teacher said he was chomping on it really good and it made him forget about biting his nails.

We talked about signs of stress. We also talked about how Dakota liked to help out and some social stories. What we are going to do is let him help in the cafeteria it gets him moving and he feels good about helping. That’s only if he wants too.

One thing that was pretty interesting was the speech teacher was talking about when Dakota sits at the table she found it hard to get answers. She also found out that when he was up and walking around he was able to answer the questions. Dakota seeks out lots of movement.

I told them my feelings of how it’s been the last few days and how I felt that no matter what decision I make I feel unsure of. I also said that I had several idea they were virtual school, him being in special ed, half day but it all goes down to the unsureness that it would help him. I also felt like it was my fault because i sent him back into school and I don’t think he can handle the school day.

i am going to give them time and until the end of the year before I make any decisions. I know a couple people that don’t want to see me do Virtual School. If that is the decision I make I will make structure and if it doesn’t work out there is no waiting he will be back in school and then I can say at least I tried. However if things do go well and there is progress with the stress and anxiety then I am going to leave things alone and let him go to school.

I did feel pretty good with how things went in the meeting.

Brittany was up late last night she really isn’t feeling good. I am taking her to the Doctor this morning. She is warm and I haven’t took her temp yet. But at times I hear this barky congestion. When she coughs she cries and she also has been holding her ears. Dakota has been coughing this morning and he looks pale. He is still running a temp. We shall see what the Doctor says about Brittany as it maybe the same thing Dakota has as he was complaining of chest pains and a sore throat. I too am getting the curd. My kids sure love to share their germies with me. LOL

there are always new things that I learn at the meetings as well as things that I share with them. The next step after the meeting as far as mine goes is to make sure all is carried out. I understand it is a binding contract and I let those in charge know it

That is very true Angie. The school has been doing pretty good about following through as well as coming up with new ideas.

Thanks shraddha! So glad to see you. I have been so behind on reading blogs. I hope to catch up this weekend. So much running around lately and I have had a lot to do with Girl Scouts the last few days. But I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Well, it does sound like the school wants to make accomodations. I hope it works out, but great that you have an alternative with the virtual school if it doesn’t.

It really does sound that way. Now if this would have been a couple years ago this is not how it would have went. I am impressed and at least I can say they are trying and they have been great.

Well to me it sounds like the school might be more on top of this than anyone thought. I’m glad you are going to give them some time on this to see how it goes. If Dakota needs to be up and moving around let him I say. If he likes to participate that way more power to him. I think you are taking the right approach with all of this. Yes it’s hard to do but I think you are very on top of the whole situation. And Stacie, don’t feel bad or insecure. You can only do what you as a parent thinks is right and if it isn’t, chalk it up and try something else. Be real positive. I so believe in the power of positive thinking. I’m glad our taking Brittany to the doctor and while there, have him check you out for your crud :)

Your right Thom they were more on top of this then I thought. I am very impressed. The more I think about it, is if dakota is still full of stress and anxiety and it doesn’t get any better it’s not really the school’s fault as they really have been trying. I would really like to see things improve. It kills me to watch all this and feel helpless that I can’t do anymore. This is the way it is and we just have to deal the best we can for now. Only time has my answers. I was really happy with how things turned out. I didn’t get myself checked out. If I get worse I will then see the Doctor Monday. I took Dakota to the DR today and she said that he has the same crud as Brittany. Have him rest the rest of the weekend. He should be back in full swing on Monday.

Poor Brittany is sick again. And of course you will get it also. Maya has been giving us all sorts of little Viruses.
It does sound like the school is trying to work things out with Dakota. I hope it goes well.
    Have a good weekend.

Your son is so lucky to have you as a mom. I think your doing a great job and being involved as much as you can to insure he gets the education he deserves. Hang tight. Maybe “time” will be the answer and it all works out.

Exactly Tam! Time has all the answers. At least I have plans if things don’t work out. If they do that’s all that much the better. I think it’s awesome that the school is doing what they are and thinking ahead. Thanks for stopping by. Have a great weekend.

It seems we are in a similar boat! I wish you ALL the best. Virtual school might be a great avenue for Dakota…even if its temporary. We are actually looking into that and homeschooling if our district can’t get their act together. Again, they are trying like you said, but sometimes trying just isn’t enough for our special boys :) Keep us posted!

It’s hard not to have the answers. I don’t really know what is best unless I try. I know that with the state’s law for homeschooling. I honestly don’t like how it is set up. They tell you the subjects and that’s it. No accountability for someone who really wants to see it. You know what I mean. How do you provide structure when you don’t know what your doing. At least with the Virtual Public Schools they give the curriculum and the assignments and they have to be done each day. So I can figure things out if it comes down to that.

How interesting to get to know SO much about how he thinks and what he is doing. I know mornings are hard on you, maybe you could write him out a schedule to look at!

Well the last three days have been horrible! They have been beyond bad. He had a med change and I think that is the problem.
