Tis the Day for the IEP

I am actually writing this Tuesday night and setting out to post in the morning. All three of my kids were sick today. Brittany has been running a 102 fever and has been very clingy. Dakota said that his throat and neck hurt. Brad called after lunch and said he wasn’t feeling good either. All three have different symptoms. LOL

I took Dakota into the Doctor today because he said his chest hurt and that really concerns me. When we got to the Doctors this morning he was running a fever. The Doctor came in. Not one he is use too and Dakota didn’t want him to touch him at all. He was being very difficult. A strep test was done and it turned out negative. As for Dakota’s chest pain he said if it persists then they would check it out. Ummm this is NOT the first time I have mentioned this. I was a little ticked off about that. Part of me sits here and wonders if it’s stress and anxiety. As when I told him it was time to get dressed for school that when all this came up. My oldest said that Dakota didn’t look good as he looked pale and looked like he was actually in pain before he even mentioned it. I notice that stress and anxiety are increasing and in a way that really scares me.

I almost cried in the Doctors office when I saw how difficult he was being as it’s so frustrating knowing that something is wrong but yet you feel so helpless because you can’t fix it. Yeah the Doctor from yesterday prescribed a med to help with the anxiety and stress but still. Is he really that stressed out over school my goodness? Each year he is at school something new comes out. In Kindergarten he totally regressed in his speech and other areas of learning that he has mastered. This year you can clearly see the stress and anxiety. The doctors notice it but I think the school is blind to it.

The IEP is after school and I have written down my requests. It will be interesting to see what they have to say. I will be sure to use examples of the stress and anxiety as you clearly have to spell it out for them. There will be people on my side there. One well I don’t know why she bothers to come especially when she can’t even return the phone calls. Won’t go there at the moment to talk about it but that is a whole other blog post on that.

I really don’t know what the answers are to have the school accommodate Dakota so it will be interesting to hear what they have to say. Personally I honestly don’t think they can they couldn’t do it in Kindergarten why is now any different. We shall see what they have to say. Believe me they will hear what I have to say. I looked up Wrights Law about Assistive Technology and what that comes down to is a case by case basis. Lot of help that was.

I will let you all know how it went when I get home. It’s rather scary knowing how much stress and anxiety he has and we still have a few months before summer vacation. Here’s to hoping I can get somewhere!

Best of luck. Stand firm and don’t sign anything if you are not happy with it. Is there anyway the school would allow independent study at home for the remainder of the year and is that something you could accomodate at home? I know several people that homeschool their spectrum kids and it has really alleviated the anxiety/stree issue.

Honestly after yesterday that’s what I want. But the counselor that comes and the case manager that over sees Dakota’s case may not agree. I homeschooled before and I can honestly say I didn’t know what I was doing nor could I provide proper structure. If the curriculum was given to me and I was told what to do each day. I could do that for sure. Because it’s something that has to be done each day. If that makes sense. I am honestly beginning to wonder if school is really way to much on him or more then we know. It’s just hard seeing this and not being able to do anything.

I am so sorry to hear what you are dealing with, and what your son is dealing with. My 11yo has slight ADHD and a learning disability and has been getting IEP since kindergarten. Our school district is fabulous when it comes to assisting cildren who need it. He has had 5-7 teachers each year according to his needs and they have tried to keep his routine as normal as possible so he is in class with his friends and his IEP is scheduled throughout the day and week. He has finally grown into his own this past year and is an A/B student with minimal symptoms.

Keep voicing your concerns and do NOT stop until you get the help you need!

Vibes that you get through this, and hugs for your son!

Thanks I won’t stop until I am happy. I feel like no matter what I want for him there is no answer for or guarantee that it will work. I won’t know unless I try per say. We shall see what happens today. That’s awesome your son is an A/B student.

I said he came in Nov they said that was last year.. Lawd have Mercy I almost made the headlines for “whoopin’ a nurses arse” I had to fill out everything again.. as well as what if they have to look at med records… does that mean he has no past records? And IEP for The Terror! It’s a love hate relationship!! We should start emailing… besides I have a question to ask you.. email me at knottylbc@yahoo.com (Subject line: Autism) in between pulling your hair out your head!! Best of wishes today! I hate that you are having such a difficult time. I hope that a lot of issues are solved today. I also hope that those 3 start feeling better soon!

    admin Reply:

I don’t think the issues will be solved today Becca but we certainly can try to work together and see what happens and what is best for Dakota. All we can do is try because we won’t know things if we don’t try them.

Hi Betsy! Thank you for the nice comments. I meant to put my update out last night but my daughter is starting to get sicker and a lot more clingy so I ended up with her comforting her last night. Thank you for the follow. I will follow you back.

I am really trying to send you as much positive energy as possible. I know it’s really tough to be where you are right now. I also hope that Dakota adapts to schools and gets relieved from all the stress.
