Homework Issues with Autism

Last year we had some problems with Dakota not doing his homework. He started school in May full time and he would get homework. There were days it would be a fight just to get it done. I really didn’t understand why. At first I thought it was just the fact that he didn’t want to do it. Which I am sure there were times he just didn’t want to do it. I don’t think he should be exempt from homework. As he is just like any kid in the classroom and should do it. As this is the second day of school and his homework has been pretty easy as to just answering a question and reading a book so far. I know that there will be struggles. The teacher and I are prepared for them and he is going to attempt it. We even agreed that he could use the laptop. He doesn’t know that yet. But I can print his homework when he is doing typing it. That will come later down the road if need be.

School is in Session

Well today was the day for the kids to go back to school. This morning was a rough one. Dakota woke up at 5 AM and tried to wake up the whole house screeching and screaming and wound tight. He didn’t want to get dressed right away this morning either. I took him to school and he held my hand so tight. I could tell he was nervous with out him even saying anything. I took him into the classroom and the teacher said hello. We started sorting through his supplies and I think he was getting a little agitated with her as he started organizing them the way he though they should be and then she would tell him no they go here. The the announcements came on and they said the pledge. Dakota’s response was I am not doing this. I thought to myself I can tell what kind of day this is going to be so I let myself out and headed home.

Zac Browser

I had stumbled across a site for a Zac Browser. Your probably wondering what that is. Well it’s the first web browser designed specifically for kids that fall on the autism spectrum. This is designed for kids 6 and under. I was going to download it and see if Dakota would actually like it. He is 8 but really in his mind he falls about 5 or 6. The browser is made to be internet friends and share positive games, videos and interests for an autistic child. I thought this was interesting and would be great for the kids who love the computer. I know my son is one of them and to find something that doesn’t have all the other garbage on it is hard to find.By the way it’s totally free!

Sensory Issue and Autism

Dakota is a hypo active sensory seeker. In other words he searches out for activities that involve motion. Some of the motion that Dakota seeks out is climbing, jumping, and spinning. He doesn’t stand and spin in circles per say. He loves to spin endlessly on the merry go round and the tire swing. He loves going really fast too. He won’t stop until he is so dizzy that he is sick to his stomach.

Back to School – Autistic Kids

Well it’s nearing that time again. The kids start school in September and I have to begin thinking about getting Dakota ready. I already know he doesn’t want to go back and since there is less structure here during the summer it might be a hard transition. I already have the bedtime and morning routine so that won’t have to change. I know mornings are going to be difficult so within the next week or two we are going to have to start getting up early for practice before school.
