## Sunya – The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting – Review

I love incorporating games into our studies when ever I can, especially math games. We recently had the chance to review Sunya-The Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting by a new company called Sunya Publishing. This game is geared for children ages 7 and up.

The Sunya – Magic and Wonder of Math and Science Adding & Subtracting is actually two games in one. You can play the game with addition or you can play the game with subtraction. There are a couple ways you can play, but we played the basic version. It was a lot easier to teach the game to my daughter. The first thing we did was create a number sentence: 3 + 2 = 5, you can create any number sentence but I just pulled that out of my head. Then I dealt four cards to my daughter and I. On your turn you first draw a card. Then you look at your hand to see if you can incorporate any numbers to make a new number sentence.

I will give you a couple examples of what I mean. We have the first number sentence laid down as 3 + 2 = 5, I look in my hand to see if I can use any of the numbers. Say I have a 2 and a 3 I can lay the 2 card down on the 3 and the 3 card on the 2 and keep the five. Say I had a 1 and a 4, I could lay the numbers 1 and 4 to cover up the 3 and 2 but I could leave the five. Another way is if I had a 6, 2, and 8 in my hand, I could create the number sentence 6 + 2 = 8. It’s not really as confusing as it sounds. Your just finding ways to make number sentences using what you have in your hand. If you don’t have anything in your hand then you draw until you do.

How you win the game is being the last one to run out of cards. When you lay your last card down you say Sunya, which is pronounced with the “oo” sound as in book.

One thing I found interesting was that it came with 30 math and science facts and riddles. You have to use your imagination and put your thinking skills on to solve the riddles. For example one of the cards say: How does a cow add? The answer is With a Cow-Culator. I thought that was cute!

You can use the cards as flash cards to learn the number. You could ask things such as what is the number? What color are the circles? How many circles do you see on the card? You can put the numbers into sequence. You can even play a matching game with the numbers. You could just for fun make equations for practice. You can have the child figure out if your adding or subtracting. You could have the child just figure out the answer as well.

**How We Used This: **

I used this with my daughter as I thought it would make great review of addition and subtraction. We used this during our math class before we did any of our work. We played the basic version of the game as that was the easiest way for us to play.

My daughter and I really had fun. We would rotate between the addition and subtraction. She really enjoyed the game and she was having fun learning and reviewing at the same time. We also chuckled doing the riddles and facts. Some of the answers we gave were pretty funny.

If you are interested in this game then I suggest visiting Sunya Publishing and watching their sight for news. This game right now is not available to the public and is only being sold in limited quantities. We had the chance to try it before it was released. It definitely is worth watching for.
