Sponge Painting, Water Sensory Bin, and Thinking of Change to Dakota’s Autism Therapy

Well today this post is filled with some fun and some decisions I have kind of been weighing on. Let’s start with the fun stuff first. Dakota had autism therapy today, so while he was having therapy I spent some much needed time with my daughter.

We found some shaped sponges while we were out rummaging. Couldn’t beat a quarter for the bag. So today we dug out the paint and some paper and I let her go to town on sponge painting. She had a blast. Although I must say at the end she decided that her whole hand was much more fun to cover in paint. lol

I then decided it was time to make a water sensory bin to take out side. Let me tell you she played with this for over an hour. I had a blue bin. From the dollar store I got the colored rocks that you buy for fish tanks or vases, I also got the sea creatures from the dollar store. The fish net I got from my neighbor. I also had some fish shaped sponges that I put in the bin. I filled it with water. She fished out the rocks and the sea creatures. We scooped by colors. Of course by the end of playing her head was soaked. She had a blast.

I have been thinking lately about Dakota’s autism therapy. They come in 6 hours a week and he just seems bored with it. Since I have noticed the ticks in both of his shoulders now, I think he needs more physical type of activities. The reason I say that is that his ticks seem to disappear more when he is focused on something else. The physical activity will also be great for sensory needs as well as wearing him out. It also interferes with my home school day. I think once school actually starts I am going to discontinue the services and enroll him in some classes at the YMCA. I am thinking of swimming and I am not sure what else. I know kids need physical activity he just needs more then a normal kid. I will then incorporate it in our home school day as well. I just really don’t see the benefits to the therapy he is getting now. Any suggestions?

My son loves his swimming lessons. He’s also more focused after a long hike at the park.

I think Dakota will like swimming lessons as well. Going to try to do a few days at the beach and see how that goes. All that digging, pounding and splashing at the beach will do him good.

Thank you Amber. I will have to check your photos out. I have been outside most of the day with my kids so I haven’t been able to sit down and read any blogs yet
