Special Ed Teacher #2
Well I went up to school today to talk to the Special Ed teacher I know and of course she is who Dakota will have next year. We talked about many things and she came up with an AWESOME idea. She suggested that she meets with Dakota through the summer. Not every day or anything but we make it positive each meeting. She has to check with the Principal to see if it is ok. I told her don’t you dare do anything that’s going to get you in trouble because I don’t want to cause trouble.
We talked about the constant worksheets and she said you can’t make fun feelings of school if work is constantly about worksheets and you know what she is right. We talked about ways to make reading fun and math too. It’s not always going to be worksheets. Thank goodness.
After talking to her I feel a whole lot better as she has so many awesome ideas and I don’t doubt her. She is one teacher that actually cares about her students. I know today at one moment I felt oh we are back where we started and is he always going to be in gym…. Well at least now I have something to feel positive about. She didn’t tell me she didn’t know what more we could do. She listened to EVERY word I had to say and was full of responses. She gave me two books to take home one is anti stress and the other is about self esteem to read with Dakota.
We shall see how he responds to her through the summer. I really think she has great ideas how to make school fun for him. So only time will tell.

She is a gem. Dakota and I read one of the books she gave me today. Was a pretty good book although I really don’t think that dakota understood it so tomorrow we will talk about it. Took a break from the regular worksheets to enjoy some reading. LOL I was pretty happy after talking to her because I have been busy as a bee researching everything that I can.

Yeah I know it’s all about time. It really frustrated me yesterday to see that and then him shut down when we got home.
That does sound very positive. A teacher can make or break a school year and this one sounds like a real gem. What a sweetheart to want to go the extra mile and meet over the summer. I hope it all works out.

We got the ok today! The principal thought it was a good idea also. Don’t know where it’s going to take us but we shall see how he reacts to her. We are going to try something on Monday before gym. She really is fantastic. I can’t wait to see what happens.
If it’s possible, I would suggest you meet somewhere that has nothing to do with school. Somewhere fun and enjoyable that your son loves. She may just need to simply be there at first and not really try to push him or interact with him. Just let him get used to having her around in a nonthreatening non teacher way. Do you mind if I ask about the worksheets? Is that what they have him spending most of his time at school doing?

No Tracie they only sent worksheets home. See he only went to school just for gym. Reading and Math are important for me and he got so bored with the worksheets. We are not going to meet at school. It will be some place that Dakota will have fun at. How he reacts will definitely be interesting.

What kid doesn’t get bored with worksheets? That’s awful. Obviously, I don’t know anything about him personally, abilities, etc. but I’m sure there is something that can be found that is appropriate for him that is not a worksheet.

Your exactly right. I told the teachers they ignored me. Finally the last too weeks of schools The last couple days of school I switched to reading books with him and less worksheets. He get so bored as he is a hands on learner. See we experimented with half days at school, that didn’t work, then we tried just gym to get him to like school. That worked up until the last two weeks of school then it went down hill and he got even more stressed out then he was. I am still really looking and thinking about all my options and making back up plans. I am also waiting to see the teacher this summer and see how he connects with her. This is really no easy decision for me so I am taking the summer to think about things. My biggest concern is how long would it take the school to realize that he doesn’t belong there that he really does need the home based education. I tried what they wanted and he regressed again. I know he has a different teacher next year who really does know autism but if we can’t get him to enjoy school or feel comfortable then he misses out. What kind of education is just going to gym if that is all he can handle. It’s not. So I have major thinking to do and time will have my answers. Right now we are stress free for the most part. Just taking it one day at a time.
