Ship Wreck Close to Home

IMG00186 Yesterday I was at the Marina Park with the kids. I noticed in the distance towards the lighthouse there was a park bench so I thought I would walk towards it and check it out. I tried to take some pictures but I guess it was foggy or hazy as they are not very good pictures. I also discovered a Huge Blue Historical Sign. There was a ship wreck back in 1878 8 miles Northeast of here. How cool is that. Not cool that it happened. But one of the many shipwrecks in the Great Lakes. Even better one close to home. The depth is 100 feet down.

The ship was the Danial Lyons. The schooner is what is left of the ship. The ship was carrying some grain which had left from Chicago and was headed to New York. This ship collided with another ship called the Kate Gillet. During the collision the Kate Gillet sliced through nearly half of the Lyon’s starboard side. Amazingly no lives were lost. The crew was rescued by the Gillet. It did say that the Lyons Ship sunk very fast.

What I find very interesting is that divers can go and check out this site. You can see the wooden ship along with equipment from back in the 1800’s. That is totally cool!

Another intersting thing I came across was another sign that talked about the Sailing of the Christmas Tree Ship. The ship was called Rouse Simmons and it was made right here in Algoma. I am not going to go into detail about this one. If you would like to read more about this you can go HERE.

I love the light house and I will get some better pictures next time. These are a little blurry but here is the light house in Algoma. It was foggy and hazy down there. So my picture didn’t turn out the best.

I don’t have any diving experience. Someday I would love to learn as I think it would be neat to look at the actual ship wrecks.

Oh wow that is cool!! Being in Michigan we have our share of shipwrecks and museums. Our honeymoon was spent checking out lighthouses. I even took a picture of a foggy day off of Lake Superior! Kind of spooky:)

Foggy seems to be a normal thing near the water, your photos make me miss the Oregon Coast even more. We lived within a few miles of the coast for awhile and explored many lighthouses.

Well I kinda live in the middle of no where. All the big citys are about 50 miles away. I would love to see the ship wreck. Maybe someday I will learn how to dive. That would be so cool to see them underwater like that.
