Sentence Diagramming: Beginning – The Critical Thinking Co. Review

Sentence Diagramming Review

I remember being a kid and having to learn the different parts to sentence diagramming. I don’t think I really liked it back then to be honest. Grammar wasn’t one of my best subjects. However, the one thing we have been working on is sentences and sentence structure. So I was really excited to see that The Critical Thinking Co. had a book out called Sentence Diagramming: Beginning for review. This particular book can be used with grades 3 – 12. It was interesting to see that my daughter is the total opposite of what I was back in school. She actually really enjoys this!

Sentence Diagramming: Beginning is a 72 page, soft cover book. This book teaches students how to diagram sentences so they can see the underlying structure of English Grammar. What I didn’t realize was the fact that students who understand the finer points of grammar apply this knowledge to their writing. My goal of this was to visual show my daughter the sentence structure in hopes that making complete sentences would click a little more.

The diagramming lessons in this book are as follows:

  • Simple Subject and Main Verb
  • Direct Object
  • Adjectives
  •  Adverbs Modifying Verbs
  • Predicate Adjectives
  • Predicate Nouns
  • Prepositional Phrases (Adjectival)
  • Prepositional Phrases (Adverbial)
  • Compound Subjects
  • Compound Predicates
  • Compound Direct Objects
  • Compound Predicate Adjectives and Nouns

How I Used This:

I used this with my daughter who is in Grade 3. We did a page a day to keep it simple and to not overwhelm here. The lessons are not long at all. They are 4 pages per lesson. I really like how it starts out simple. The one thing that I really liked about this was that it gave a little reading and showed an example. The last page of the lesson you write your own sentences and diagram them. Of course I wrote the sentence and she diagrammed it. Then we took it one day farther and she would have to write a sentence and diagram it herself. So instead of doing this for 4 days I just extended it another day. Through out the lesson there is other things to read and help with what you are doing.

The lessons are step-by-step and moves on to complex sentences. You really do get a lot of practice on each focus of the diagramming. At the end of the book there is a review. I love the fact that their is a review. We have not finished the book but we are continuing to work until my daughter gets stuck. It get harder and some of the stuff she hasn’t learned. I am very surprised though as she really took to this and has done very well.

I feel this gives my daughter a great visual in sentence structure and how she can apply it to her writing. I haven’t seen it make improvement yet in how she writes sentences. I definitely think it will help. I believe it will help her make her sentences more complete.

I feel we have moved easily and slowly until we hit lesson four. It is taking just a little longer for us to get through as it’s getting a little harder for her. She likes the challenge of it. I honestly think this is great for anyone to learn as I really do think it gives a nice visual to your grammar. It makes you think a bit.

I wanted to share with you that The Critical Thinking Co. has a new software bundle called Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic Before Kindergarten!. It contains letter sounds, phonics, vowel sounds, alphabet game, and math. It looks like a really cute program. I know one of the littles that comes during the week would enjoy this. We are just starting out working on letter sounds and the alphabet, while he is here. The program itself actually looks really cute!
