School is in Session
Well today was the day for the kids to go back to school. This morning was a rough one. Dakota woke up at 5 AM and tried to wake up the whole house screeching and screaming and wound tight. He didn’t want to get dressed right away this morning either. I took him to school and he held my hand so tight. I could tell he was nervous with out him even saying anything. I took him into the classroom and the teacher said hello. We started sorting through his supplies and I think he was getting a little agitated with her as he started organizing them the way he though they should be and then she would tell him no they go here. The the announcements came on and they said the pledge. Dakota’s response was I am not doing this. I thought to myself I can tell what kind of day this is going to be so I let myself out and headed home.
I had to go up to the school twice to give Dakota his meds. The first time he tried to walk out the front door. The second time he didn’t want to leave his sister. LOL
I walked to get him from school and he waited patiently. I actually thought I was going to cringe with his behavior but NOPE not today. I was so happy about that. I met up with his teacher and she said that after the first time I gave him his pills it was hard to redirect him. The second time this afternoon she said that he didn’t participate in gym and that he was excited to have seen his sister. She said there was a time where she didn’t know if he was rebelling not to do something. I said it could have been, it could have been that he was bored or just didn’t want to do it. She also said they had shout outs and she could tell that he couldn’t handle the noise. We had a nice walk home. He helped push Brittany in her stroller. We stopped at the bakery and he got himself and Brad a donut. Brittany got a cupcake. All of a sudden while we continued home a truck went by and he covered his ears. Not that it was a surprise to me as he is noise sensitive at times. I asked him why he didn’t participate in gym and he said that his feet hurt. So I am trying to figure that one out. I know it can be noisy in the gym. We got home and he went and laid down. He literally shut down. I knew that after the day he would have been over stimulated. So I am glad he took that time for himself. I am really happy to see him start identifing things too.
So all in all not a bad day for him.
Brad said that he had locker trouble. They put him with the freshman and had to change his locker. LOL He was happy that he didn’t get homework and that all it was to get some papers signed.
Brittany and I had a busy day with a meeting and then a trip to the library, picking up Dakota and I had to do some cleaning. Well I attempted anyway. LOL

I can’t remember but is this Dakota’s first time at this school? Gannon’s first week was a bit rough. This is our 3rd year with all the same teachers and paras, but this year they added the preschool program to the high school. Gannon has been overwhelmed by the size and the different sounds that echo an such. He is now used to it, but I know it took awhile. Good luck!

No This isn’t Dakota’s first time at school. He was there for Early Childhood and Kindergarten. I repeated Kindergarten and first at home and at the end of the year last year he went back in to First Grade. So this will be his first full year since I pulled him out to homeschool. This is really nothing new to me. He did this in kindergarten and at least I know from what happened then what to watch for and I am going to have really good communication with the teacher so things will go well.

Stacie, Thank You for this post. I have thought about Dakota and wondered how he was doing. I hope that things will settle down for him. I hope he has a great teacher to help him get adjusted. I am always here if you want to talk. Glad your oldest son had a good day (Brad isnt it?) I will keep you and your children in my prayers.

Thanks Audrey. The teacher is really nice and she gave me a great report I thought. Which meant she was paying attention. I will let her know how he was after school. They want the kids to read for 20 minutes. Dakota struggles with reading so right now I am not pushing 20 minutes. If he reads me a book. I will be very happy. Next week I will increase to two books if he doesn’t get any that was sent home to read. I will gradually work him up to the 20 minutes. The assistant principal is involved too so I am really confident right that things are going to go ok. We may have to make adjustments and such. They adjusted Dakota’s meds yesterday by phone and he actually slept until 7. So that was really good. Yes my oldest is Brad.
Sounds like a pretty good first day to me. The anxiety of the unknown and new routines can be alot for any kid, but those on the spectrum are particularly affected. Gyms are very noisy, but do you think his feet may hhurt – does he have new shoes or maybe he outgrew his old ones?

I don’t really know if his feet hurt. I asked him if it was the noise and he said no. He did have new shoes but he doesn’t like shoes so that may just have been a sensory thing. I don’t know yet. I will talk to his gym teacher and see what she thinks as the weeks go on. He did shut down for a while yesterday actually twice. Then we talked for like 30 minutes. So it was really nice to just let him talk. Then he went to bed. Your right it was the anxiety and stress of a new day which he will get use to the structure.
That’s good he’s able to identify the source of his discomfort. I hope you work out what it is soon and are able to do something about it.

You and me both Annette. I am glad he is starting to identify things. This morning he doesn’t want to get dressed for school. So this is going to be a chore this morning. LOL
