Our experiments with Polymers – Bouncy Ball and Slime

Today we learned about natural polymers and man made polymers. Dakota learned that you can find natural made polymers such as rubber from trees and man made rubber. He learned about slime how it can be protective to earthworms to keep them warm as well as helping them travel along different surfaces. He also learned some fun facts about Borax.

We started out with an experiment to make a bouncy ball. However, ours was kind of sad so we didn’t take pictures. We tried to bounce it and it just plopped to the floor like a sad soul. He was a little disappointed that our experiment didn’t turn out.

Now the slime we had a blast with. Add more borax to the solution made it thicker and less slimier. You can make different textures of slime from real slimey to less slimey. We even took it out in the sun to see what would happen and it dried out some and lost it’s sliminess and became more firm.

Next we put the slime in the fridge to see what would happen. Dakota found out you can’t the slime as well and it didn’t have the elasticity in it. Not to mention it was cold.

The last thing we did with the slime was put it in the freezer. Dakota could not mold it. There was no elasticity at all.

We had a blast with this experiment.

Make your own slime:

SLIME

Ingredients:

  • borax powder
  • water
  • Elmers Glue
  • teaspoon
  • measuring cup
  • 2 bowls
  • food coloring (optional)

Directions:

  1. In your first bowl pour 1/4 cup glue and a 1/4 cup water and stir together until well mixed.
  2. In your second bowl add one cup of water and 1 teaspoon of borax and mix until Borax is dissolved. I added the food coloring.
  3. Add a 1/4 teaspoon of the water/borax solution to the glue mixtures.  You keep adding the 1/4 teaspoon until it’s the consistency you want it to be. The more borax solution you add the thicker the slime gets and loses it’s slime.

Have fun experimenting 🙂
