Mission: Math….Sabotage At The Space Station is an iPad app developed for girls ages 9 and up. What really had me curious about this app is that Kata Enterprises is seeking to empower girls to be self-assured and educated in math, science, and technology.
It starts out by telling a short story which in turns the S.M.A.R.T (the Science Math and Radical Technology Agency) needs your help as the space station has been sabotaged. You use your math skills to repair the science labs and find out who sabotaged the space station.
Once you get through the story you get to design your own character. Which my daughter designed my character. Then you proceed on to talk to other Junior Agents and then you start exploring the parts of the space station. In each spot there is three mini games that touch different skills. Each level gets a little harder. The more you play the more you master the skills. It’s ok to make a mistake as you just keep going and it tallys your right answers needed to complete each mini game.
You are constantly receiving feedback and each completed task leads to a silly outcome. For example, I was in the chemistry lab and I had to measure out how tall the beaker was, measure fluid and powder to create recipes. I made exploding jam, hot chocolate, poppers, and I can’t remember what else.
There is no time limit in this game which is nice as you don’t have to feel rushed. You can take your time to figure out what the right answer is. In a sense to your introduced to science and technology through the story as well.
Some of the math problems you will find here is: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, bar graphs, place value, measurements of volume, factors, multiples, angles, polygons, and spatial rotation.

I must say that I really enjoyed playing this game. My daughter sat beside me and watched with curiosity. My daughter isn’t old enough for this game. I am sure though once she is able to play she will love it.
I liked that I had three different levels to master. I felt that each level got harder and harder and was challenged. I must admit I didn’t know the polygons but learned them as I played the game. It took me a while but I got it. So even I am a little rusty. I didn’t feel rushed through the game. I went at my own pace. I am still playing it because I would like to find out who sabotaged the space station.
I noticed some levels I couldn’t complete and I had to come back to at a later time. Which was fine as I expected that. My favorite so far was building the robot and being in the chemistry lab. Oh and I even learned some Mandarin numbers 🙂
This is definitely a great app that presents positive images and role models for girls! I love that there is no in-app purchases, no links to websites. So there is no disturbance in the game.
The characters in the story are fun and I like the mystery.
You can purchase Mission: MATH….Sabotage At The Space Station on iTunes for $7.99. It is compatible with iPad.
