Meeting Update
Well I had the meeting with school yesterday. The Special Ed Director wasn’t there as his father is sick and I understand that. So the principal sat in on the meeting. I was very overwhelmed with everything yesterday so I couldn’t really write a post last night like I wanted too. I had to call the principal this morning and clarify a few things.
First off all they did get a fax from the Doctor. However it was only the diagnosis and not the recommendation we thought it would be. Which I was royally upset about at first. Then we continued our talks and I let our in home counselor talk. By the way her court thing was cancelled so she was able to come. Thank goodness she was there too.
Right now they think it’s best to focus on Dakota’s emotional being rather then focus on pushing him into the academics. Which I thought was a good thing as the principal pointed out this morning that Dakota is regressing by avoiding school. Which in reality I didn’t even think about that. I was thinking regression in academics but that’s not the case. So he had a good point.
Dakota most enjoys gym class so this is what we are doing. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday he will go to school for gym from 12:45 to 1:30. That’s it. This is to get him to have good feelings about school and that school is fun. If he wants to go long or come in early he is more then welcome to be there. If he doesn’t go then we do know that he can’t handle being there and move on to a different step.
They are willing to next year set Dakota up in the Resource room with someone one on one to do Virtual School. That is I believe if things work out with getting him to enjoy school. If not then I think I will be doing it at home. He gave me the name of the curriculum they would be using. The schedule of it and he said it was very structured. So we shall see how this all will pan out.
They are willing to work with us to accommodate his needs. So only time has the answers for us as to how just going to gym 4 days a week will go. I will still be working on some reading and math with him in the morning like I have been because I really don’t want him to regress at all in reading or math as he has come so far. He is doing it so we are going to keep doing that part.
I am sure I may have forgotten a thing or too. I am still too overwhelmed to figure out if I like what was proposed or not as the whole point was he couldn’t handle school. It may come down to half days with Virtual school being done at school and then some at home. I don’t know. I have to worry about now and how he will react to just going to gym. That starts next week.
So all in all it wasn’t a bad meeting.

That’s actually a pretty cool idea to do virtual school in the resource room. I have never heard of that and it’s a very creative way to do it. That way he is still in school and can be integrated for whatever classes work out for him.
Glad your advocate could come as well!

The principal kept saying they would keep trying to be creative. Your right it’s a great idea as then he is at school. He is really excited to just be going to gym so that is a start. I think this really could possibly work. Trying to see things more on the positive side.
Well it seems to me that the meeting was very productive for a change. Which is good. This sounds like a solution for the time being. I’m hopeful that this will lead to more productive meetings in the future. Good for you

I think it’s a good start Thom. I think they are finally hearing what is going on. Honestly I see DJ excited about just going to gym so this may very well work. Time will have my answers that is for sure. It was nice to hear they were thinking of his emotional state rather then the academics. It took a while for all of it to sink in as it was very overwhelming.
Sounds they have thought about everything well and are willing to find ways to support him.
My son dropped out of school, because the school was not able…eh willing, to find other ways to deal with him.
I offered virtual school and it was not acceptible then. Homeschooling was no option because it’s forbidden here. Unbelievable.
I’m happy your son still has something he enjoys at school. Keeping that option open is of main importance.

You are exactly right Laane. They want him to be comfortable at school. He loves gym so starting him on this is a good thing. If he wants to go longer he can. If he wants to stay after gym that is ok too. At first I must say I wasn’t happy with them doing the Virtual School thing but then it was better explained to me and it really would be a good thing for him. He needs to get out of the house and even if it’s one on one it will be productive for him. The principal took the time to explain the schedule so I was very with how the schedule would go. We don’t know how long he will be there but hey it’s a start. Time will have our answers. Honestly I really think this may work. Now had you asked me yesterday I kept seeing all the negative things and thinking about how he reacts. I am scared of what I don’t know will happen. So I have to let that part go and just wait and see and think the best.
For once it seems like things are going in your favor! I hope it continues to do so!
