Local Meteorologist Came To Do Weather Class

For the longest time I have wanted to put together a weather class for the homeschool community. I contacted Cameron Moreland from NBC26 and he agreed to do a class for us. Thank you Cameron for coming and speaking to us and Thank You to the parents for allowing me to post this picture.

We had a great turn out for the weather class and I think a tour of the station and maybe the National Weather Service could have been a bonus added on to this. Maybe later in the future.

Cameron started out with a slide show for us about the different weather that affects our state. It was filled with great information and at times comical.

One of these things I found interesting was a slide Cameron showed of a satellite picture of Wisconsin. In North East Wisconsin there is a scare from tornado that happened June 7, 2007. I don’t have the exact picture he showed but this picture from satellite will give you an idea. He said this would show up on the satellite for a time to come. The picture below is from the NWS so I can’t take credit for this picture. The line you see in the picture below is the track of a long lived tornado.

Cameron talked about severe weather with the kids. Only 7% of the storms in Wisconsin actually produced a tornado. I believe this year he said we had 8 tornadoes in North East Wisconsin. I believe 6 of them came from a freak storm that went through in August.

Cameron also talked about the different records for our state of heat, cold, snow, and rain. He also talked about the different destructive tornadoes.

We also had him explain to the kids what does he do at work. How does he predict the weather. I also had him explain the green wall in the back as the kids I don’t think understand until he explained it fully that he is actually pointing at a blank wall and looking into TVs that are on the side to point to the correct area.

Then the kids got to ask questions. Lots of the kids asked really great questions. I think they were really into it. Dakota my son didn’t want to go at first. After the class he said mom I really had fun!

The kids (all the kids) and some parents were shown on the 5 and 6 o’clock news that night! It was great to see on TV that they were willing to present this for homeschool kids 🙂 Thanks NBC26!

So if your looking for a possible Field Trip or Weather Class for your own homeschool group. I highly suggest contacting one of your local TV meteorologists to come out to a place to talk to the kids. I also suggest maybe touring a news station so the kids can see first hand what the meteorologists do on tv. You could even tour the National Weather Service in your area.

Me too. I recorded it. That makes it twice within a month my daughter was on the news. She got to be the weather kid on a Wednesday. That is another awesome experience for the kids.

My daughter didn’t seem to be too interested. As there were kids and she wanted to interact and not pay attention. My son on the other hand listened to what was being talked about so that’s a plus 🙂

Every year we go to a local production from a Symphony and last year it was about weather! The local weather man talked and met with the kids. We really enjoyed it!

Me too Tess. I swear I should have been a meteorologist in another life. I follow the discussion during the summer especially when there are storms.
