Imagine…The Great Flood – Book Review

My daughter and I both have a love for reading. My favorite thing to do with my daughter is read a book together. We had the pleasure of reading Imagine…The Great Flood by Matt Koceich together for this review.  This book was published by Barbour Publishing. This book is perfect for kids ages 8 – 12. Honestly I think any age could learn something from this book.

The book starts out where Corey is talking with his mother about moving. He isn’t very happy about this move, in fact he is really angry. His mother and him hear thunder and know it’s time to go and get home. Suddenly Corey’s dog Molly takes off into the woods and Corey goes after her. He ends up tripping, falling, and hitting his head. When he wakes up he is actually in another time period where he is faced with two lions. The time period was 2400 B.C. Mesopotamia. As he prays and asks God for mercy, he hears a boy named Shem, say that the lions are harmless. Shem is Noah’s son. As they were heading to the Ark the first time with the lions they run into Giants. Again Corey remembers something his mother would say and that was Rely on God. He never changes. The boys end up back at the Ark. Shem doesn’t seem concerned at all that Corey is from a future time. It was kind of shocking to hear that they never heard of rain, or clouds before.

Corey ends up going out again with Shem and his brothers to help gather the rest of the animals to bring to the ark. If you wondering why they are bringing the animals back to the Ark, it is because they are doing what God had asked them to do. As they are trying to figure out how to gather animals Shem takes Corey to a man he has been friends with and asks for help. As you read through the story you have the giants, the villagers, and Elizer ( a man who possesses special powers) all working against Noah and his family. Elizer tried several times to come between Shem and Corey but it didn’t work. The adventures these boys have will keep you on the edge of your seat.

As I tell you my favorite part of the story. Corey is stuck in a hole and it has started raining. He still has Shem’s Fathers Staff. He uses that to try to get out. Suddenly Elizer and the Giants come and they trap him in and there is no way out for him. Corey feels the rain coming down harder and harder and wonders if he will ever get out of that hole. This is where he uses the staff to get out. To Corey’s surprise there are elephants that are outside of the hole. They end up pulling him out. That’s not where the story ends there is more. I can’t tell you because it will ruin the story. You will want to read this page turner yourself.

I think one of my favorite parts of the story is the story that Corey remembered about his Great Grandfather. His Great Grandfather had to ask forgiveness from one of his customers. He left his wallet and at the time he needed the money and kept it. He had lied to the guy. Later on he came back and his Great Grandfather apologized to the man. The thing was the guy had forgiven him along time ago. He gave his Great Grandfather  an envelope and told him to open it. Inside was money. His Great Grandfathers promise was to break up the blessings and multiply it. He ended up giving out money to the homeless.

The book itself was very good. My daughter and I had a hard time putting it down when we read it. There were many lessons to be learned in this book. I think forgiveness was really a big lesson. The other lesson is no matter what we are going through in life God never changes. I felt that the story really brought the Bible to life. I think there were times in the story that my daughter could relate to Corey. I found Corey to be a brave, helpful, kind, and caring young man. I think the one thing he also learned more about what his Faith!
