Homeschool Planet Review – My Favorite Online Planner

Homeschool Planet Review

One of the things I like to use is an online planner for our homeschool. My main purpose of use is to keep track of time spent in hours. Our state requires 875 hours of homeschooling a year. There are things we do that I don’t even think about adding to the planner, not because I can’t I just forget to add. I also wanted an online planner to be simply to use. Well I found everything I was looking for in a planner and more with Homeschool Planet by Homeschool Buyers Co-op.

Being able to keep my home and homeschool organized together in one place is such a bonus. When you log in you create different family member profiles. Really your just adding names. You can create separate logs in for each person. Your calendar is right their to view and start adding to when your first log in. It is very easy to set up subjects. You color code them and it’s your choice of what color is used. You create core and noncore subjects. The planner is able to keep track of time totally and separately so you can see how much time you are spending on both. You also have a to do list that you can create and a grocery list.

I should mention there are three different ways you can view your calendar: daily, weekly, or monthly. I always have a daily view for the most part as I schedule lessons daily right now during the summer. I will change that come fall as we are on a full time schedule. Summer we are on a much lighter schedule.

The nice thing is once you schedule your appointments, to do list, and lesson plans you receive a daily email as well as those you have created id’s for. Each person gets to see what is on their schedule and the subjects and chores they need to do. It can even text as well. The bonus of this is when I need my husband or myself to pick up groceries I can have a list texted right to our phones. This is so convent.

No worries if you forget to mark something off or need to reschedule. When you log in the next day it prompts you what you want to do with those things on your schedule that need to be changed. I should back up a little as well as when your lesson planning you can plan out the days of the week you choose to do your assignments. It will be reoccurring which is a nice thing. You can make them daily, every couple days, or weekly if you need. The schedule is up to you. That is one thing I really like about this. Makes lesson planning easy

Another nice feature is that you can see the resources you use in your homeschool. You can see this as a separate list. If you use websites, books, dvds or more it’s all their. That does come in handy when you need to add resources for the kids or yourself. It is also nice as a reference to help you keep track too.

There are different reports for you as well, such as assignment lists, class notes, grade report, class hours and transcripts. I haven’t used the transcripts yet but those will come in handy when the kids are in high school, unless the state changes the way they require us to homeschool. There is a rescheduling helper and a grading helper as well. I really only used the rescheduling helper as I don’t keep grades for the kids. I don’t have to as I know what their progress is and I have nothing to report.

There are also widgets you can use for research, weather, meal planning, daily quotes, and more.

How I Used This:

I used this mainly during the week to schedule the kids lessons that they were working on. So what I am saying is that I used this Monday – Friday as I really didn’t have to use it on the weekends as we don’t really have schedules on the weekend. I also used the To-Do List and Shopping list a lot. I didn’t really pay attention to the daily emails as I knew what had to be done. I did use the texting feature for the shopping list! That surely came in handy.

One thing I didn’t use that I do plan on using is the meal planning. I don’t normally plan meals ahead of time and I would really like to get in the habit of doing that so I can better shop for groceries. I do have the weather widget and daily quote widget.

I did not create separate id’s for the kids as I don’t have them check off assignments when they are finished. The reason I don’t is that I just have to keep track of time, so it is much easier when I check off what is finished so I can adjust the time spent on things. Although in time I might create id’s so they can check off assignments as well as chores they need to do.

My Thoughts:

This was so very easy to use and set up. It didn’t take me along time as it was pretty self explanatory. If you watched the video that also help you get an idea of what the planner is about and how things work as well. I really like that everything is color coded. It makes things much easier to find. I also liked that I could schedule things for both my son and daughter at the same time. You can check if one or both complete it. There are some prompts that come up to let you know you have checked something off for one or both. I think that is great because sometimes you might have one that completed it and the other who didn’t. The majority of the time both the kids completed the same activities.

I like the fact that I don’t have to schedule something at a specific time. Those that I schedule with no specific time is right on top of the calendar for me to find. There are times that I do schedule things at certain times such as field trips and appointments. It is as flexible as I need it to be.

The To-Do list is awesome as it help me know what I need to get done that day if there is something important. It stays there until I have checked it off. So if I don’t get to it that day, it will be there the next day.

My favorite thing is the shopping list. I love that I can send a text to mine or my husbands phone. This way there is no reason to forget anything on your list. Had I sent myself one today I wouldn’t have forgotten my daughters tortillas.

I can also synch this with my iCal and I love that too! You can synch it with other online calendars as well.

I have to be really honest here as I am totally in love with this planner that I cancelled the online planner that I was using. The reason is that I feel that this offers me so much more and everything is all in one place. I don’t have to have separate places to go to.

The nice thing is before you decide to buy a subscription, either monthly or yearly, you can try it free for 30 days. Your credit card info is not charged as they don’t collect it right away unless you choose to subscribe. So once your 30 days are up your free and clear if you choose you don’t like it, but I really think you will fall in love with it too!
