Frustrated

Before I get started with this story I want to let you know that those that are on the Autisum Waiver Program in Wisconsin have social workers assigned to us to oversea how things are behing handled with services. They are also there to support us and guide us when needed. Now this story is not about my son. This is about my friends son.

My friend went to pick up her child from the place he was at, which is the special program he is in, and noticed that he looked dehydrated. She asked when the last time he drank anything and they said an hour ago when he ate a popsicle. It was very hot that day. So the kids should have been drinking more then what they were. Her child was then hungry and started crying. The mother asked the lady if he could have some of his crackers. She went to get them and told him he needed to stop crying. He did stop crying then she said he had to ask nicely. He asked nicely. Then she wouldn’t give it to him which basically was teasing him and upsetting him as he did what he was told and then he didn’t get them. Which I can understand why this became a big issue. Well the child then reacted and went to bite her. The lady slammed him up against the wall and then held him there. First off  you don’t slam a child against wall. Second of all there are proper ways to restrain a child that provides deep pressure to them when this happens. This deep pressure then calms them. My friend was so horrified by this she grabbed her child and pulled him out of the program. She then tried to call the director of the program who will not return her calls. Her case worker said she is going to petition the court to have her son taken away if she doesn’t put him back into the program. She has a meeting in a couple weeks.

First of all I don’t think this social worker has any mind at all. If there is any abuse or things that are being handled wrong they are suppose to get involved to investigate this. It sounds like the social worker doesn’t even care that this happend. It really frustrates me because not all autistic children can tell you what they feel or exactly what they want and they lash out the only way they know how. Not to say the behavior that he did was right as it was not. I don’t feel that he deserved to be slammed against a way. That is just plain abuse to me.

They have a meeting a week from Wednesday. I suggest she called the Disability Rights of Wisconsin, and I told her to see if this place has any violationsn against them. I also do think she could call the state and report it. It’s not right. I don’t feel that her child should get taken away because she wants to protect him. I think it’s very very unfair. It has me really really mad.

I don’t remember at this point what else she told me as to what else happened but I know it wasn’t good. I told her to be prepared for this meeting the best she could. It just irratates me as I don’t feel this place knows how to handle children nor autistic children.

I can see where all the frustration is coming from. The school must be run by private people. The state should be notified. Americans with disabilities to should be notified. And any child welfare system you have in your state. It is just a shame.
    Thanks for visiting Grampys Place.

It’s not a school. It’s a place where special needs kids go for socialization I think. I will have to ask her again. I am pretty sure it’s not school. The place is ran by a Doctor if I am not mistaken. You and I are on the same wavelength in what I told her already.

I understand absolutely why your friend would want to take her child away from this programme. I’m not American and don’t know all the various support groups but I do agree that these have to be the next step. Young people with disabilities must not be subjected to torment just because some of them can’t tell anyone about it! BTW Thanks for visitng my SWF post. Janice.

Your welcome Janice. I really enjoyed it! It is really sad. I am going to help her the best I can.

I don’t know why the cops weren’t called for child abuse. I would have done that immediately. There is no room for crap like this and they need to be reported to the law I think for treating children like that. This just pisses me off to no end.

I don’t know why she didn’t think of that. Probably because she was so angry at the time. It makes mad too.

I’m back again. Just wanted to say one thing. I think a lot of the things people do is because of ignorance about Autistic children. If you find some one who needs a little educating send them to my other blog. I just did a Autism post.

This is outrageous! I would advise her to call Wisconsin’s Child Protective Service (Department of Children and Families)

Also, have her contact her local police department to file a complaint. This would be considered assault against a minor, child neglect, as well as mental and physical abuse.

Tell her to document everything, while it’s still fresh in her mind, and to keep her own paper trail concerning this situation.

This person taunted the child, resulting in the child’s reaction. She should have known better, and should not have punished him for her stupidity!

She has to be HIS voice, and allow him to be heard.

    Please keep us updated.

That’s exactly what I told her. Later today I am going to google violations against this place and I am not sure yet but if she wants me to be there I will go to the meeting with her. I told her to try to get an advocate there so that she knows she isn’t getting no run around. This really disgusted me when she told me about it.
