Educating Kids about Autism

I sat thinking and pondering this morning. Still ticked about the bullying issue with my son. There are several autistic kids in the school. I am wondering am I out of line if I talk to the principal to see if I can get in the lower grades classroom to talk to the kids on their level about autism? There was a huge park issues this summer and I talked to the kids and it worked.

Just wondering your thoughts!

I think it is a great idea. They have so many guest speakers on so many other topics, and with everyone trying to increase the awareness of Autism, I think this would be a fantastic place to start!

Thanks Vicki. It’s a thought I had for a while. I am not sure if the school will allow it or not but I shall find out.

I also think it is a great idea. I think some of the problems with bullying come from the lack of education about autism.

You do got a point Crystal! Sometimes kids just pick on others because they are different. In small towns if you don’t grow up with the kids they normally don’t want anything to do with you and are just mean. Been there done that.

Absolutely! Ask the principal. Also ask to make a small “presentation” to the parents’ group (PTA, PTSO, etc.) Ask local TV and radio talk shows to do local stories or interviews about autism. Is there a local weekly newspaper? Use that also.

I didn’t think about the small town paper here. I think I will call and find out if I can contribute an article or be interviewed. Thanks for the suggestion on that. I know some of the parents in the PTA I wonder if I could present it in a PTA meeting. I will talk to the gal on Monday.

Stacey, It may help if the teacher would sit down with her class and explain with you. I hope to get caught up soon on my blog reading. Prayers are with you.

Thanks Audrey! No worries on being behind. I too am behind and reading my bloggy friends blogs. Things have been crazy around here. Hope all is well with you. I will be talking to the teacher tomorrow. Dakota had a fever and their policy is if they have a fever you have to keep them home one more day with out a fever. So he is home with me today. The morning is going great!
