DIY Water Clock

DIY Water Clock

We have been working on a unit study with Robots. One of the things that I thought was pretty neat was we made a water clock. Making your own Water Clock is easy and the nice thing is you can incorporate doing things to see how long it takes you.

The Ancient Egyptians made water clocks that were bowls filled with water and it had small holes that the water would leak out. This was used to tell time. There were lines in the bowl that they were able to see where the water level was to be able to tell the time.

There was also these beautiful clocks that were built and at noon a portion of it would be filled with water and as time went on it would leak into another canister and it would make the clock work. If it was to slow they would have to adjust the water level. These clocks have the faces that our clocks do today.

I am not really sure how these fit into robotics as I don’t really understand. However, I thought they were pretty neat.

Water Clock

Supplies:

mason jar

cup that fits into mason jar

pin

water

sharpie marker

stop watch

Directions:

Water Clock Time

What you do is take your pin and poke a hole in the bottom of the cup. Then you place your cup into the mason jar. You want to make sure that you have enough space from the bottom of the jar. You then fill your cup with water. Every minute you make a line to mark one minute. You do this for 15 minutes.

Water Clock after 7 Minutes

What happens is you see the water slowly stream into the mason jar. We only did this for 7 minutes as my son got bored with it. It was enough time to time him for other activities.

Once you have your fifteen minutes dump the water back into the cup and see how long it takes you to brush your teeth? How long does it take you to clean your room? How long does it take to do a short chore? It’s rather fun using this as a timer.
