Have your children ever had head lice? Whether they do or don’t Bugs in my Hair! is a great book by David Shannon. Actually talking and reading about it made my head itch…
We never had head lice in our house. We did have neighbors in our apartment building that had them and they had a hard time getting rid of it. When I heard they had it. I immediately bought treatments and treated everyone right away. I cleaned from top to bottom and did laundry. Wasn’t taking any chances. The people that had it, had a very hard time getting rid of it.
I often wonder how the kids feel when they find out they have it. I suppose they may feel ashamed or maybe even embarrassed.
Well Bugs in my Hair is a great book about head lice. It explains to kids in kid terms what head lice is. I found the story to even be comical. I think in a sense a child may not feel alone as there was other kids in the book who had it. The bugs in the story are illustrated in a funny way.
It also really illustrated well the piles of Mt. Washmore the mother had to do. Which is true as the bed sheets and the clothes and anything that could be washed was washed daily.
My over all thoughts are that this is a great story to read to your child as it’s not something that is often talked about unless one has it. I know I said this early but I believe it will make the child feel they are not alone. I feel it explains the process well from when they first land on your head and you get the itchies….to the war battle of of using anti-lice weapons to get rid of it.
My daughter asked a few questions and we talked about it. She also giggled at the illustrated lice pictures through the story.
This is great for ages 4 – 8.
