Bob Books #1 – Reading Magic App Review

When Dakota was first reading I bought a box of the Bob Books. They were simple and short and sweet. They were black and white pages. It seemed to me to be phonics based. I noticed a lot of words that rhymed such as Matt and sat. We would read these over and over until he mastered them. We would then go on to the next one. These were great for beginning readers. I also liked how my son would get excited after he could read each book. He had a self of accomplishment and was happy he learned to read a  book.

Well Learning Touch has come out with an app that you can either use alone or use with the books. It’s called Bob Books #1 – Reading Magic. Bob Books #1 – Reading Magic is a phonics -based interactive game. It uses simple drag and drop features, which can be used by younger children.

We started on the first level. That’s what I am working on with my daughter. She is three. On the first level it starts out as black and white. You touch the word Sam. Then you see letters and you see the word Sam at the bottom. The childs job is to drag and drop the letters in the correct place to spell the word Sam. Then once that is correct you touch the word cat and you repeat what you just did. Once cat is spelled. The page because colorful and the sentence is read. I find that very rewarding for the child and find it encouraging to move on. My daughter got really excited when she saw the color page and that kept her going.

Bob Books Reading Magic will show your child how to:

  • make connections between letters and sounds
  • sound out simple words
  • spell words they’ve read

The game includes 12 scenes for a total of 32 words. Four game levels providing increasing challenges to children as they play.

Bob Books Reading Magic follows the same method and principles as the #1 best selling Bob Books series. Bob Books were created to lead to the ah-ha moment when letters first turn into words. By slowly introducing new letter sounds, using consistency, repitition and stories fit short attention spans, your child will quickly find his or her own ah-ha moment.

My Overall Thoughts:

I really think this is a great learning to read app. I liked how words were sounded out once my daughter dragged and dropped each letter to the correct place. I loved how her face light up once the page became colorful. She was ready for the next one after that. I must be truthful I didn’t explore the other levels yet. But I look forward to them because I loved the first level and how my daughter took to it. I will be adding this to our homeschooling collection and will be using this a lot with my daughter.  I really highly recommend this for beginning readers and even kids who may have trouble reading. You can purchase Bob Books #1 – Reading Magic on itunes for $1.99. It is compatible with ipod, iphone, and ipad.

Disclaimer: I was not paid for this review. However I did receive a copy of Bob Books #1 Reading Magic for my review. The opinoins in this blog post are 100% mine.

I am really excited about this app. I am desperately awaiting the hope that they’ll make a Kindle Fire app. *sigh*
