Autism Moms Thursday Pet Peeves
Tammy from Autism Learning Felt is hosting Autism Mom Thursdays. This week is all about pet peeves with IEP Meetings. Oh boy I should have some good ones here. LOL
- Dakota gets sick easy during the school year. I don’t exactly know why. Not sure if it is the stressors from school or what. But I really hate hearing we are concerned with how much school he is missing. As if I have a remote that says Dakota you need to be sick. Or that isn’t a concern of my own. It’s really irratating. I provide Doctors excuses each time he is out of school.
- His speech teacher is a very boisterous women. She can be very negative in the meetings and it gets really sickening to hear. She really needs to learn how to talk and deal with parents.
- I really hate the hesitation when they don’t know something. The new head person of the IEP’s is really good. He really knows his stuff. He isn’t afraid to correct them. For example at the last IEP meeting we talked about Dakota possibly having access to a computer or laptop when writing well the special ed teacher said that is an administrative question. The guy looks and said no it’s not. LOL
- I really hate how uneducated some of the staff is about autism. They have to learn the difference of when he has had enough and when he doesn’t want to do something. The two are very easy to figure out. After all I just figured it out.
- I also hate how they say MOM. I have a name use it!
- I don’t like how they say at times well he doesn’t do this at school or they don’t believe me when I say he knows something. After all I am around him more then they are and I gave birth to him. I do know my own child!
Right now that is all I can think of. I am sure I can think of more but my brain is a little foggy I have been up since 4 AM.

I don’t have any of my own children with autism, but I used to be a special ed teacher, so I do understand some of your frustrations! Especially about the teachers not being educated enough — I used to live in Minnesota and they are extremely advanced in their knowledge and programs for children with autism. Moving to AZ was kind of a let down while I was looking for a job because no one seems to know much!

I raised a lot of ruckus when I took Dakota out the first time. Which the principal was even researching autism and during the summer attended a course. Honestly Dakota’s teacher is really good. At least so far. Some teachers don’t understand nor do they have the patience. I wish he was in a really good school right about now.

We’ve been in the same meetings, lol. I also hate that they believe it isn’t true unless they have seen him do it.

LOL We sure have. I wish you could be a fly on the wall when one of the case workers goes to the meeting. She is brutal to them. She takes no for answer. I love when she goes. LOL

I find that interesting that the MOM bugs you. I am positive it is how they say it. when my son was having his surgeries and stayed in Children’s, they always called me Mom. For some reason I loved it!

LOL Vicki. It just bugs as the meeting is about Dakota and I really just don’t like it for some reason. They do that at the Doctor but I don’t mind it at the Doctor. I know the Doctors office really good as a couple of them are neighbors.

My teens are always coming home withe lots of illness from school. I think it’s because kids whether autistic or not just don’t take the proper precautions when around others.
And I know what your saying about some of the instructors seeming unskilled….a friend of of a friend mine has an autistic son. He didn’t speak for 5 years. One day he got the flu and couldn’t hold anything down. His mom took him off dairy because it was making him puke. Within a week he was extremely verbal. Talking away. His instructors said it was a fluke.
Fluke? Now his mom is removing other food groups and I believe has a new group of teachers.

That’s the third person now I heard about diet and autism. I think it’s fantastic that he is now verbal. I don’t know if it’s a fluke thing or not. I think it’s amazing. Those are poor words to use to a mother. I can imagine that the mother didn’t like that at all. I am glad he got a new group of teachers. It makes a difference when you have good teachers. Dakota’s Kindergarten teacher was awesome. She felt bad because there is only so much she could do. She understood the autism. She was fantastic. His first grade teacher was great too. His teacher now she is very strict but she is very good. I really see a lot of effort on her part. Thanks for sharing that with me Shelia. The more I heard about diets and autism the more I want to try it.

I think the reason why it bothers me that they address me as Mom, instead of by name is because of the lack of respect it demonstrates. The meetings are supposed to be about all of us working together. All of us are supposed to be an important part of the team. Everone else in the meeting is addressed as Ms. So and So… Then, I am addressed as Mom. Sometimes, they even have that condescending tone in their voice when they say “Mom has something to say.”

Brad has a couple issues going on at school. I have a call into the Principal to look into things for me. Dakota’s teachers and I are meeting on Tuesday will let you know what I think after that. I really won’t know a whole lot until the year progresses and if Dakota is sick a lot or not. Time will tell.

I would LOVE to be apart of this, but we haven’t had the dreaded IEP stuff really yet. All of the IEP’s we have done have been wonderful oddly enought. But man….I am guessing its only because he is in preschool and still very young.
