Hi Shelley! That is a beautiful poem your daughter wrote! My son was diagnosed with autism at 18 months also. Although we knew at 10 months. I will be over shortly to check out your blog. I will follow you too! I am behind lately on my blog reading but I am slowly catching up. :)

Hi there! I just found your blog! I love what your son wrote about his brother. I have a 5yo autistic son, and when I read this, it reminded me of my daughter, who is now 16yo. Here is what I had posted on my Facebook page awhile back:

"My son was diagnosed with Autism when he was 18 months old. We joined the Autism Society of America and attended a few meetings. We received a paper that they were having an essay/poem contest, for anyone that is/knows of someone with autism, or affected by autism in some way. My oldest daughter, who was 12 years old at the time, took it upon herself to write a poem. We were amazed at how insightful she was, especially for never even hearing the word "autism" before. She was learning with us. She won the contest and they asked her to read her poem at the next meeting. Needless to say, there was not a dry eye in the room. Here is her poem...

Autistic Adam

My baby brother has Autism
He does not know how to speak
He spins around and shakes his head
but, that's no reason to seek
for a different baby brother.

He doesn't look at me for a really long time
and sometimes he doesn't understand what I say
I still love my happy little brother
We sometimes like to play
but it doesn't last very long.

I wish he could talk to me
then I would understand what he's going through
It's hard for me to realize that he may never talk
but it's something I may have to do
He's my baby brother and I love him with all my heart.

When my wonderful baby brother gets older
he may not have alot of friends
because he may bother you unintentionally
but that sure depends.
He may have it bad, he may have it mild
I pray for him every night.

My life sure is going to change
since I never had a sibling with a disability
It's confusing and hard to understand
but, I have to take responsibility
in making sure he lives his life to the fullest.

I love my baby brother, Adam,
with ALL of my heart!

I cry every time that I read this. He has come such a long way in the past few years..he can now talk!

Love your blog! I have a blog, though it is not about Autism. I tried before, but it was just too hard for me to verbalize what I was feeling...but it is getting easier :) My blog is about couponing!! I'd love for you to come visit!

I know that kids are sometimes mean to one another, but the parents really do need to step in. Maybe if they would stop it early, all of the bullying-whether it be cyber-bullying or that gang rape that occured...wouldn't be so bad.

LOL Thom. Well my heat breaks when kids are mean. But what makes me happy is when you say something to them and then all of a sudden they are friends again. LOL Dakota is a really good boy when he wants to be.
