Autism Mom Thursday
Tammy over at Autism Learning Felt hosts the meme Autism Mom Thursdays. This weeks theme is anything related to family.
This is a picture of Dakota and Brad from earlier this year. We all went to the park. I think it was the beginning of spring. As you can see Dakota isn’t by the other kids he was by his brother. That day he really did try to play with other kids but there was some kids there that weren’t to nice to him and it really broke my heart. The other parents didn’t even try to stop what their kids were doing.

Since we are talking about family, I had my son sit down and write the Pros and Cons of having an autistic brother. I was really proud of him as he took his time. I really thought he was going to list a lot of harsh things but he did pretty good

You know Stac…he has his family and that’s the most important thing!!! If he is happy being with you all and his friends or friends parents don’t want to play nice, so be it. He is your family’s friends so he does have friends. I know it must be hard to see that other kids don’t want to be bothered, but boy, he always has his true friends
Great photo

Your right Thom. He has one friend and her name is Jenna. Man do those two fight like a married couple. LOL But they are good friends and when he is in the mood he does go out and play with her.

It breaks my heart when that happens to my son. I just don’t understand why other parents don’t step in and say something to their child.

I don’t understand it either Tammy. It went on for a while and we just up and left. Took everything in mine and my husbands power not to go off on the parents.

What a beautiful set of boys! and I admire your son for writing both the postives and negatives..
And it breaks my heart too when kids are not nice to my son on the playground also. Sometimes it makes me think where they learn it from? and with parents who don’t step in and say anything to their children.. it makes me even more angry. Sometimes I just want to go up to them and say something.. but then again sometimes I am too nice for my own good..
but hopefuly one day the world will change..

Thank you Kari! I got the idea of having Brad write something because of someone else. I have always wanted him to do something like that. It justs took me actually seeing someone else. Now I have more ideas for Brad to write more. It was a way of earning his phone back. He had to be honest and he had to really think about it. He did great.

Thanks Vickie! I never understood why parents don’t say anything. I guess I know my Dad raised me better then that. You go to the park to have fun and meet new friends not to be picked on.

LOL Thom. Well my heat breaks when kids are mean. But what makes me happy is when you say something to them and then all of a sudden they are friends again. LOL Dakota is a really good boy when he wants to be.

I know that kids are sometimes mean to one another, but the parents really do need to step in. Maybe if they would stop it early, all of the bullying-whether it be cyber-bullying or that gang rape that occured…wouldn’t be so bad.

Hi there! I just found your blog! I love what your son wrote about his brother. I have a 5yo autistic son, and when I read this, it reminded me of my daughter, who is now 16yo. Here is what I had posted on my Facebook page awhile back:
“My son was diagnosed with Autism when he was 18 months old. We joined the Autism Society of America and attended a few meetings. We received a paper that they were having an essay/poem contest, for anyone that is/knows of someone with autism, or affected by autism in some way. My oldest daughter, who was 12 years old at the time, took it upon herself to write a poem. We were amazed at how insightful she was, especially for never even hearing the word “autism” before. She was learning with us. She won the contest and they asked her to read her poem at the next meeting. Needless to say, there was not a dry eye in the room. Here is her poem…
Autistic Adam
My baby brother has Autism
He does not know how to speak
He spins around and shakes his head
but, that’s no reason to seek
for a different baby brother.
He doesn’t look at me for a really long time
and sometimes he doesn’t understand what I say
I still love my happy little brother
We sometimes like to play
but it doesn’t last very long.
I wish he could talk to me
then I would understand what he’s going through
It’s hard for me to realize that he may never talk
but it’s something I may have to do
He’s my baby brother and I love him with all my heart.
When my wonderful baby brother gets older
he may not have alot of friends
because he may bother you unintentionally
but that sure depends.
He may have it bad, he may have it mild
I pray for him every night.
My life sure is going to change
since I never had a sibling with a disability
It’s confusing and hard to understand
but, I have to take responsibility
in making sure he lives his life to the fullest.
I love my baby brother, Adam,
with ALL of my heart!
I cry every time that I read this. He has come such a long way in the past few years..he can now talk!
Love your blog! I have a blog, though it is not about Autism. I tried before, but it was just too hard for me to verbalize what I was feeling…but it is getting easier
My blog is about couponing!! I’d love for you to come visit!

Hi Shelley! That is a beautiful poem your daughter wrote! My son was diagnosed with autism at 18 months also. Although we knew at 10 months. I will be over shortly to check out your blog. I will follow you too! I am behind lately on my blog reading but I am slowly catching up.
