A Life In Balance Book Review

If you are a parent of a child with special needs, a teacher, or someone who works with special needs, then I highly suggest the book A Life in Balance Book that is by the Learning Breakthrough Program.

A Life in Balance: Discovery of a Learning Breakthough is by Eric Belgau, as told to him by his father Frank Belgau. This is a autobiography of over 30 years of hands on work and research that leads up to the Learning BreakThrough Program. The Learning BreakThrough is a drug free alternative treatment for those who suffer from autism, ADHD/ADD, dyslexia, and other learning disabilities.

Frank Belgau is very inspirational in his accomplishments and dedication through out the  years. The book starts out with a story about Eric (his son) growing up with Frank Belgau and how the Learning Breakthrough Program worked for him in the Hollywood Industry. Then the autobiography of Frank Belgau and how the Learning Breakthrough Program was started and its current state.

Frank came from a family of high achievers. His only problem when he was a child was having problems reading. He over came his challenge of reading one summer by improving his running and being less clumsy. Frank was in the air force for 10 years before he became a teacher. He started out in a normal classroom and was asked to teach art to a class of “brain injured” children. He saw the challenges of the students, but he also saw their will to learn. Therefore, he started thinking outside the box to help these children excel. From this experience he ended up in different positions at different places teaching special needs children.

It was an amazing journey with the different positions and the different places he worked to try to educate children. He met very inspiring people along the way. Many of the people who were just like him in wanting to help education the children. He learned what would work and what wouldn’t through trial and error. If he saw something working he would then modify it to make it better.

It was also amazing to see how education had changed since the 60’s. Back in the 60’s the “brain injured” children were expected to lay their heads down all day. The lack of education to kids who had learning disabilities was kind of sad. It was amazing at the same time to see how things had changed to the current day. Frank Belgau touched many people and changed the lives of thousands of children who suffer from learning disabilities.

The Learning Breakthrough Program that Frank Belgau established, uses balance boards, bean bags and pendulums for brain training. These brain exercises integrate auditory, visual motor planning, tactile, balance, body position and neurofeedback systems in order to strengthen neurotransmission and calibrate the brains function. Watching this come together through the book was fascinating.

The Appendix in the book lists some activities that you can try at home for free with out purchasing any addition items. The activities include: walking, hopping, skipping, and jumping.

You can watch a video about the Learning Breakthough Program here. If you would like more information about the equipment you can view it here.

The book costs $16.94.

My overall thought:

This book was an amazing read. I plan to read it again so I can soak up more information. Frank is a very inspiring man. I love how he took the time to want to make a difference in the lives of children. The people he met along the way were just as fascinating to learn about. These people, his ideas, his trial and errors is what made Frank who he is as well as designing a fascinating program. I also plan on using some of the ideas that were mentioned in the Appendix with my son. My son has struggles and learning disabilities so it will be interesting to see him blossom.

I had never heard of this book. My oldest has severe ADHD and my youngest does to some extent. That’s why we homeschool. I’ve found that the best way for them to learn is by being active and making it fun. I’m very interested to read more about this man’s methods now. Thank you!

My son has severe ADHD as well. I do not like him on the meds. So I would love to be able to treat him with no meds.

Interesting mind-body ideas here…Intriguing. We definitely have some clumsiness AND learning differences…and it IS all connected. Thanks!
